Brisbane Environmental Laboratory
Established in 2012, the Brisbane Laboratory is a specialist environmental testing facility providing advanced analytical services across a wide range of environmental matrices. Core capabilities include the analysis of contaminated soils, solid wastes, waste oils, wastewater, groundwater, drinking water, saline and freshwater systems, landfill materials, soil vapour, petroleum vapour intrusion (PVI) and biota.
In March 2026, the laboratory relocated to a new purpose-built facility at 7 Smallwood Place, Murarrie. This next-generation site has been designed to support increased demand, offering over 5,000 sqm of modern laboratory and operational space, enhanced workflow efficiency and significantly expanded capacity to deliver faster, high-quality results.
The laboratory offers a standard turnaround time (TAT) of five business days, with priority services available for same-day analysis and expedited 24-hour, 2-day, and 3-day reporting, subject to applicable surcharges. The Brisbane Laboratory is recognised as a centre of excellence for PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) analysis, with particular expertise in complex matrices including biota, soils, waters, wastes and process-impacted materials. All PFAS analyses are performed in accordance with relevant US EPA methods and the US Department of Defense (DoD) Quality Systems Manual (QSM) Version 6.0, ensuring the highest levels of analytical quality, sensitivity and data defensibility. Significant capability is also maintained in combustion ion chromatography (CIC), supporting the determination of total fluorine (TF), extractable organic fluorine (EOF) and adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF). This capability complements targeted PFAS analysis and provides valuable insight into the presence of known and unknown fluorinated compounds in environmental and biotic samples.
In addition, the laboratory has strong expertise in the analysis and interpretation of acid sulfate soils, fully aligned with the latest Australian guidelines and regulatory expectations. The facility delivers a comprehensive suite of environmental inorganic and organic analyses, supported by state-of-the-art instrumentation including GC‑MS/MS, LC‑MS/MS, GC‑FID, ICP‑OES, ICP‑MS, Discrete Analysers and Combustion Ion Chromatography systems.
Accreditation
The Brisbane Laboratory is accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA), Australia to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, providing ILAC‑equivalent assurance of technical competence, quality systems and data integrity.
